Business Certificate
Chelsea businesses must apply for a business certificate through the City Clerk's Office in conformity with the provisions of Chapter 110, Section 5 of the General Laws. Any individual conducting business under any title other than the complete real name of the owner, whether individually or as a partnership. Inc., Corp., Ltd., LLC may only be used by a corporation. However, any corporation doing business in a name other than the corporate officer must file the corporate name.
A business certificate is in effect for four (4) years from the date of issue. A new filing must be made every four years as long as the business is conducted.
Upon discontinuing, retiring or withdrawing from such business or partnership, or in the case of a change of residence of such person or of the location where the business is conducted such a change must be filed with the City Clerk. The filing fee is $10. Violations of these provisions shall be subject to a fine of not more than three hundred dollars ($300) for each month during which such violation continues.
To apply for a business certificate, please complete the top portion of the Business Certificate application, including the business name, business address, full name, residence, telephone number and signature. The filing fee is $25. Please note that your Business Certificate must be notarized.
Return the Business Certificate to the City Clerk’s Office, 500 Broadway Room 209, Chelsea, MA 02150, with the following:

Return the Business Certificate to the City Clerk’s Office, 500 Broadway Room 209, Chelsea, MA 02150, with the following:
- Copy of Certificate of Occupancy (obtained from the Department of Inspectional Services, City Hall, 500 Broadway Room 201, Chelsea, MA (617-466-4130); and
- Filing fee in the amount of $25. We accept cash, check or money order payable to the City of Chelsea. We also accept credit cards: VISA/MASTERCARD/AMERICAN EXPRESS/DISCOVER. A service charge of 2.95% or $1.00 minimum will assessed per credit card charge.
