FY25 Residential Exemption

The City's Residential Exemption application period for owner-occupied properties purchased in 2023 is now open. Here is some important information for the new Chelsea homeowners to know before applying:

  • The Residential Exemption is a local tax exemption for new Chelsea homeowners approved yearly by the Chelsea City Council and the Chelsea City Manager. This tax relief is in addition to any other exemption that a homeowner may be entitled to but cannot reduce the tax owed to less than 10% of the property's market value.
  • To be eligible, you must have owned and occupied your property as of January 1, 2024.
  • This is not an automatically enrolled benefit. Homeowners must fill out the application and provide proof of residency and household income. The Board of Assessors reviews the applications and determines if the exemption is granted.
  • A homeowner also may qualify for the exemption on ONE parcel only.
  • Although the FY25 application period closes on April 1, 2025, you must submit your application by October 1, 2024, if you want to see a reduction in your January tax bill.
